Opportunity Missed

Yesterday's post mentioned a doe that materialized briefly in the trail and vanished almost instantaneously.

It was like a ghost.

Only it wasn't a ghost.

I had moved a trail camera that same morning to a new location on a trail - the same trail that doe traveled.

Here she is.  I know it's the same deer because of the location and time stamp.  Just a few moments before shooting time...

Bucks

Last weekend I was out on stand trolling for a deer and saw nothing until just before shooting time.  A doe that materialized briefly in the mowed trail and moved on. More about that in a post or two.  Hunting has been slow.  I've been getting some nice bucks on the trail cameras but nothing until dark.

There's too much freak'n corn in the woods (from the lazy hunters shooters).  Hoping for the rut to kick-into high gear before too long and get those boys moving during daylight hours.

Speaking of whitetail deer of the male persuasion here are a couple of the bucks that are frequenting The Platz...

View From a Deer Stand

The unobstructed view from a deer stand is an under-appreciated experience.

High in a tree with clear skies and not many ostructions to the view.

Take, for-instance, these shots from the last weekend.

Fall colors.

Pre Rut

The bucks are starting to move.  This last weekend the girls and I found a couple of active scrapes and several rubs.

The boyz are getting their pre-rut horniness on.

A couple of scrape pics (one that is filled with water from all of the rain) and another that I put under observation with a trail camera....

Changing of the Seasons

There is nothing better than the changing of the seasons.  Even spring - mud season - has its compensations.  Of course this fall has been like mud season.

Rain, rain and more rain.  There is standing water everywhere.

Sure, the dogs are muddy most all of the time but it is a small matter to order them into the ponds or creek to rinse-off.  Muddy problem solved.

And as much as I might grouse about the standing water and mud that pervades the landscape it's all good in the end.

Spectacular fall colors.  Check out these tamarack...

The World's Best Pumpkin Seeds

Well at least possibly the world's best roasted pumpkin seeds.

Halloween is just around the corner and with the carving of the gourds all of those seeds can be put to good use.  This should be a family-wide kitchen project.

I've been roasting pumpkin seeds most of my life.  Beginning as a child with the help of my parents.  Followed-on by several decades of jack-o'-lantern carving.  And finally by serious pumpkin growing.  For their seeds.  Admittedly I've grown pumpkins for carving, roasting on the grill or making pie filling.  We all kou can get a can of pie filling just about anywhere.  But where can you get a good roasted pumpkin seed?

This year brought the return of the seed-producing pumpkins.  I wasn't looking for pie filing or a carving squash.  I wanted seeds.  A hybrid pumpkin renowned not for its pulp but for its seeds.

If you're a fan of roasted pumpkin seeds you have to check this out.  Not only are these pumpkins terrific for fall décor they are prolific seed producers.  Furthermore, their seeds lack the tough outer hulls of other gourds making them perfect for roasting.  On top of that they're a bush-variety and don't take-up large amounts of space in the garden.

A fetching bright orange gourd with dark green stripes, non-GMO and organically-raised pumpkin of about 5 to 8 pounds.

And chock-full of hull-less green seeds - pure kernel - without the tough shell.  All you have to do is open them up, insert your hand into the pulp and all of those seeds will slip right out.  And plenty of them too.

Pour your seeds into a stock pot and add enough cold water so that they float freely.  Add to that as much kosher salt as you can stand (about a half cup).  Bring your pot to a boil and then turn-down the heat and simmer uncovered for 30-40 minutes.

Drain your seeds in a colander.

Spread them out on a cookie sheet and bake at 300 degrees - stirring every 15 minutes with a spatula for 30 to 45 minutes.  When they start to snap, crackle and pop your seeds are talking to you.  Pay close attention to them.  They're almost done.

Finished product!

A light, nutty, salty, snack that is full of vitamins, minerals and healthy antioxidants.  They’re good for your prostate fellas.  I made a couple of batches – straight kosher salt and for a special flair a batch sprinkled with Penzeys Cajun Spice prior to roasting.

Serve with an icy-cold brewski during the Packer game and at deer camp.

Coyote

This was the best of a series of pictures - most of which were blurred.

A coyote.

The blurred pics were of a couple of smaller (supposedly doglike) animals that accompanied this.

Pups maybe?

Little Buck

Wonder if this is the little button buck I passed on while bow hunting last weekend.  Better to let these little guys walk and take a doe instead.  All the better for a balanced population.  Besides, he might on his way to growing big antlers one of these days.

Location suggest it might be.  But there's so many you never know for sure.  They all look alike.

Mr. Fix It

Fixed the Arm Pit stand and tidied-up the Park Bench stand further east along the creekA couple of replacement lag bolts, some deck screws and hammered loose nails back in place.  All is good.

Brought the girls along and they wore themselves out chasing through all the water.

View From Above

Hunted last weekend from the Arm Pit deer stand.  I don't know exactly how it got this name but it's catchy for sure.  And a rather nice location.

Judging from these pictures you can see the swampy funnel that the deer like to sneak through.  I passed on a nubbin buck.

The stand needs some work.  Everything was in ship shape condition back in August but the storms that raged through left the Arm Pit with several dangerously loose boards.

How to Upright a Deer Stand

Almost a month and a half ago storms lashed the peninsula.  There was flooding, downed trees and power outages.  There were straight line wind gusts that knocked dead falls across the trails and blew over one of the Guard Tower deer stands.

 Unbelievable.

In any event it has finally dried out enough for me to get the tractor out and set things right.  The Frau took the video in case things went horribly wrong and there was a coroner's inquiry.

Mr. Buck

Nice boy deer - poor camera placement.

The camera placement matter has  hopefully been corrected following a relocation adjacent to where the deer have been materializing at this trail.

I'll report back next week...

Huntn'

Out for a fall walk with the gilrs to see if we might kick-up some birds and find dinner.

Not happening.  All the flushes we're too far and too furious.

Need more practice.

Sigh...

Asters and Nest Box

I don't want any of my readers to get the impression that I am some sort of philistine.  I have culture.  Plenty of it.

As evidence of this I present to you an ode to fall.  A still life - au naturale.  I call it Asters and Nest Box.

It is evocative of the absence of the birds that have departed their home for the south and the rebirth of life evidenced by the blooming of the aster.

Culture.

How to Cook a Dog

Dogs.

Recipe

Couple of dogs
Take a long walk hunting
Hose-off
Allow to dry on the porch
Feed
Let them find their way to the wood burner
Rotate periodically to ensure they are well done

I prefer my Labs.  It's a double recipe.  They get cooked pretty regularly...

The Art of Raising a Puppy

By the Monks of New Skete.  It's a book that is recommended reading if you are going to be raising a puppy.

We have a copy that was read, reread and studiously-applied in raising our two pups to adulthood.

Visitors last weekend brought their own copy as they now have a replacement Gordon Setter obtained from a breeder outside of Manitowoc.

They're how driving back home to the mountains of Colorado.

In a nod to the Badger state the pup's name is Wisckey.

From Harvest to Table

Friends for the weekend called for an entire meal from The Platz.

Clockwise from left - crashed Yukon gold potatoes, venison - grilled rare to medium rare and a vegetable medley - carrots, green beans, English peas, Lima beans, sweet corn and broccoli.  The wine was from California.

Yum!

The Clogger

In a continuing saga of living life at the edge I ate this last weeked.

It was an experiment.

Bun from Scaturo's Bakery.  Probably full  of gluten.

One-third pound ground chuck burger from Marchant's Meat Market.  Grilled on an exceedingly hot grill over charcoal.  You know what that means. Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), compounds linked with the C word.

A big pile of melted Swiss cheese.  Topped with garden onion sauteed in butter.  Gasp!
