Holiday Cacti

Earlier this month I predicted that The Frau's Christmas Cactus was likely going to bloom shortly before Memorial Day.

I must be prophetic because here it is in all it's glory.

It's nowhere near Christmas but is sure is a nice touch in the dining room.

Holiday Cacti

Meet Schlumbergera truncata - the Christmas Cactus - a common and favorite house plant.

The Christmas Cactus unsurprisingly blooms at Christmas and also sometimes around Easter time if cared for properly. A month prior to Christmas you will be able to watch the tips of the leaves beginning to grow. The tips grow darker as each day passes, until a bud forms. At Christmas time, as if by magic, the buds open to a beautiful flower that will add color and warmth to any holiday season.

Judging from this photo The Frau's Christmas cacti is getting ready to bloom - probably just before Memorial Day.  Lovingly cared-for it is seriously off schedule.  It apparently doesn't read the calendar.

You can learn more about the proper care and propagation of this plant here.

The Double Entendre

Meaning something that is devised to be understood in one or both of two ways.  A double meaning. More often than not one of the interpretations is rather obvious - whereas the other is more subtle.

I present to you a cactus centerpiece on the dinner table at a get-together last evening...
