Classic Sandwich Simplicity

There is nothing more elegant in its simplicity than the radish sandwich.  Hearkening back to my childhood this was a favorite of my father and remains a summertime indulgence of mine.  It is sublime.

Ingredients:

Garden radishes – sliced thin
Two slices of bread - rye, sourdough, whole wheat
Unsalted sweet cream butter – room temperature
Sea salt

Instructions:

Slather each slice of bread generously with butter.
Top with radish slices.
Cracked sea salt over all to taste.
Yields one sandwich.

The Garden Chronicles

Each year I try something new in the garden.

2023 brings the Philadelphia White Box Radish.

An heirloom radish introduced in 1888 by Johnson and Stokes of Philadelphia, PA.

A dependable variety for cultivation in a garden bed or fording in boxes.  It has a spicy zip and is well-suited for salads and stir fries.

I also am raising leeks this year so stay-tuned.....

The Garden Chronicles

German beer radishes.

First sowing was May 8.

First really measurable harvest was today, June 7.

These put your ordinary, pedestrian, California radishes that languished for ten days on a truck to shame.

Vive le jardin magnifique!

Ode To The Radish Sandwich

There is nothing more elegant in its simplicity than the radish sandwich.

Harkening back to my childhood this was a favorite of my late father and remains a summertime indulgence of mine.  It is sublime.  And it is very European.

Garden radishes – sliced thin
Two slices of my home-baked deli rye
Unsalted sweet cream butter
Sea salt

Instructions:

Slather each slice of bread generously with butter.

Top with radish slices.

Cracked sea salt over all to taste.

The Garden Chronicles

When you live equidistant between the equator and the north pole it is the little things that matter.

The spargel is awakening from its winter slumber and beginning to peek thru the mulch.

And the radishes I planted awhile ago have germinated.

Let the gardening begin!
