Friday Music

Composed and recorded in 1968 by Tony Joe White this tune describes the life of a girl, her family, growing-up poor in the deep south.

The lyrics feature of dish consisting of cooked greens made from poke weed - thusly, poke or polk salad.

Released in 1969 the single reached number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.  However, it was The cover Elvis released that popularized the song.

This is a really terrific cover by the Muscle Shoals Sound SaRon Crenshaw Quartet.....

Carnival

If you are celebrating  Carnival, Joe Cain Day is commemorated on the Sunday before Fat Tuesday.

Joe Cain (1832-1904) is regarded as the founder of Mobile's modern-day Mardi Gras celebration. In 1866, Cain paraded through downtown Mobile dressed as an imagined Indian chief, an act that helped rejuvenate the city's carnival tradition after the Civil War.

Joe Cain lies at rest in the Church Street Graveyard in Mobile, AL
