Another First

Thirty-one years I've been here on the Peninsula and I've never had a personal encounter with a tick.  Almost anywhere else in the state of Wisconsin is an altogether different story - mostly involving wood ticks.  But here?  Nada.

Until last weekend.

This is a deer tick.

A first.

It's a blood-feeding arachnid; and we picked a half-dozen or so off the dogs following our hike on the Ledge last weekend.

This is the first time we've personally been witness to ticks on the peninsula.  Heretofore, I always assumed my personal experience was evidence that Door County was low on the margins of tick sightings and tick-borne illness.  A little bit of internet sleuthing suggests tick-borne illnesses have been on the uptick (pardon the pun) of late.

The trend for the tick population on the peninsula is increasing, as evidenced by a significant rise in both tick-borne illnesses and related hospitalizations in recent years. Contributing factors likely include an expanding tick population (mild winters), improved reporting and increasing numbers of outdoor enthusiasts recreating in tick habitats.

These buggers are exceedingly small and difficult to spot.  You're likely to feel it before you see it.

This is a black-legged tick - Ixodes scapularis.  And it is the primary vector for Lyme disease in the eastern and Midwestern United States.  There's some additional scary-sounding diseases this arachnid will share with you; including,
anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Borrelia miyamotoi disease, Powassan virus disease, and ehrlichiosis associated with Ehrlichia muris eauclarensis.  Consequently, we'll likely have to take greater precautions treating outdoor footwear and clothing and be extra vigilant with tick risk exposures.  Ugh.

Boarding House

This is the third upland retriever we've trained.  And one of the things our doggo really loves is going to doggy daycare.  Better yet; staying there for boarding.  Yes, boarding.  For days and weeks on end.

Early-on we seized-on the opportunity to socialize this dog with other of her species and as a consequence this pooch loves going to Red River Canine LLC to hang with her pack.

Recently,I had to have outpatient eye surgery in Green Bay and as a consequence doggo scored a couple-three days at the Dog Spa to run with her pack.  Topped-off with a pedicure and a coif from the groomer before returning home.

Porch Beer

After working in the garden it's always good to retire to the porch with my sidekick to enjoy a bowl of salted in the shell porch peanuts, a frosty Canadian lager and watch a spring thunder storm roll-in.

It's quitting time after-all.

Raising a toast to our friendly neighbors to the north!

A Ray of Sunshine

If you rise early enough for breakfast then following a trip to the yard for a potty break you can stretch out on your dog bed and soak-up the morning sunshine.

The Return Of The Ditch Chickens

Ditch Chicken - a colloquial name for one of North America's tastiest invasive species - the ring-necked pheasant, Phasianus colchicus

Introduced to the United States from China in the late 1800s it has now become popularized as a game bird luring outdoor enthusiasts into a billion dollar business chasing them .  A large bird with a big juicy breast they are pretty good tasting grilled as a kabobs, smoked for cocktails or a pasta dish or in a pheasant pot pie with rich gravy and vegetables.

Wisconsin's pheasant season closed a week ago; consequently and in very short order (these birds do read the regulations) they have returned to the yard to taunt the dog, dine from the wild bird feeders and even poop on our porch.

When it comes to wildlife there's never a dull moment around these parts.....

Yum!

PRO TIP

Sauerkraut probiotics support your dog's digestion, and its fiber content helps prevent constipation, bloating, and flatulence.

As with all our dogs, Ruby loves the stuff.

Our delicate flower is still quite flatulent however……

Gathering Of The Clan

Another weekend of family eating, drinking and frivolity is in the record books.  Three generations of our immediate tribe gathering outside of a holiday, wedding, funeral or other family event.   And the monsoons paused just long enough to smoke chicken and ribs on Friday and make a batch of brick oven pizzas Saturday.  Today dawned sunny and bright.

It can stop with the rain now.

Anyway, now that the dog hair has been swept, bedding laundered, garbage bagged; some evidence worth sharing....

High Alert

Recently I scored a weekend alone with my dog.

Translation: a long walk every day followed by exciting chores like cleaning the septic tank filters, scrubbing bird feeders, spraying herbicide on invasive plants and hauling stuff to the town dump.  We even completed the annual cleaning of the machine shed.

Meanwhile, the dog became noticeably 'clingy' without Jill being around.

DEFCON 3 to 4, depending.

Cottontails in the yard were a medium threat.

Then there was this.....

Pup Antics

This is what happens when you get the creeping impression that things have been too quiet for too long.

And the dog is nowhere to be seen.

The dog will have quietly slunk into the bathroom to filch a roll of toilet paper.  Made herself comfortable on the bed.  And efficiently unrolled and shredded it.  Ingesting an unknown amount in the process.

This too shall pass.....

Welcome To The Family

Yesterday closed following a busy 30+ hours with the new pup.

Key chapter to raising a pupper is routine. Feeding, rest, abundance of supervised playtime/exercise, potty breaks and positive correction and redirection.

Constant supervision is imperative.  Wear raggedy clothing as puppy teeth are daggers.

A couple more things:  Super Blue Moon over the ancient pump house tonight.  Saturn is at one o’clock  and Ruby is sleeping it-off.

Pro Tip - bifurcate puppy shifts with your partner and sleep after the dog has flipped her switch to off.

Today we started walking from the house on the trail to Silver Creek and back.  The dog is free to run but is clipped to a check line I can step-on to halt or hang on to her.
