Inky

Schwarzer Tinte Hund ‘Inky’, age 14, passed-away peacefully this week in the arms of her humans.

Preceded in death by her parents, Ratatouille and Remote Control and feline family members Bubba and Figaro, she is survived by her people Jill and Tom and her niece – Queenie – the blonde ’back-up’ dog.

Born June 13, 2006 Inky came to live with her people at six weeks of age and mastered the art of flushing and retrieving. She was a quick study and grew into a reliable partner in the pursuit of upland game birds.

Inky traveled extensively; including pheasant hunting trips ranging from Wisconsin to South Dakota and from Canada to the Gulf Coast on family vacations.

Outside of work Inky enjoyed life at the farm and engaged in countless hours of hunting frogs, swimming in the ponds, eating baby bunnies, rolling in disgusting stuff she would find in the woods and porch-sitting with her family. From time-to-time she and Queenie would team-up to filch green beans from the garden. She embraced life, was a friend to everyone she met, a canine good citizen and modeled the stoicism of a Labrador retriever. She was the perfect dog.

Inky will be sorely missed yet fondly remembered as Tom’s Girlfriend

A celebration of her life will be held at a future date. Per her wishes adult beverages will be served.

Hunt ‘em up!

The Dowager Retriever

Our black Lab - Inky - (sometimes referred to as Girlfriend) is now officially more than 100 years old.

I am sporting a replacement hip - she has a replacement knee.  We both had orthopedic surgery not too far apart in age.  In any event, even though this geriatric dog has creaky joints and spends much of her day snoozing in her crate.she still likes her walks.

Some trail camera action shots of the Dowager Retriever kicking-up her heels.

Wait.  A dog can be trained to heel.  But do they have heels?

Oh, never mind

You Snooze You Lose

The big dog came-up lame the other day and on Monday she and I paid a call to the vet in Green Bay.

An exam and a couple of x-rays revealed nothing out of the ordinary so we'll chalk-it-up to an elderly dog soft tissue injury.  She's on a course of doggie NSAID and a pain meds with strict orders to rest.  She's been sleeping a lot.

Nonetheless, with exercise and potty calls less regimented we're leaving her 'unlocked' in the crate with the option to summon a person for a visit outside.

She woke me up for this the other day.  Not sure if she really had to pee or if she didn't want me to miss the sunrise....

Living with Labs

This is my old dog - Girlfriend.  She is so old that she is somewhere in her mid-nineties in large breed Labrador retriever years.  In polite deference to her advanced age we sometimes call her the Dowager Retriever.

Nevertheless, she enjoys her walks, mixing-it up with her younger niece and short upland bird hunts here at home.

And she continues to take time to stop and smell the black-eyed susans....

The Dowager Retriever

Girlfriend is 89 years of age and still mixing it-up.

We went out today with her niece (Blonde Dog) to place a hunting blind for next weekend's deer camp opener.  And fetched the SD cards from the five trail cameras patiently maintaining their silent vigil.

Check-out the smile.  This is a happy dog for sure....

Some days you have to post a picture of your girlfriend...

Poetry in Motion

My old dog still manifests the athletic grace of a Labrador retriever half her age.  Forgot to pack a shotgun on today's walk - it's open season for pheasant, grouse and doodle birds...

Dogs

Time for some dog pics.

Our graying, elderly Lab - demure and stoic.

And the goofy, blonde Lab - smart and affable.

The Girlfriend

Me and my main dog are getting creakier, gimpier and limpier.  Grayer too.  I have a replacement hip to match her replacement knee...

Before...

And after...

We've got more than a few good upland bird-hunting seasons ahead of us yet.  Yet, time sure flies when you're having fun.

Stay tuned...

Even in her retirement years this old hunting dog doesn't show a hitch in her giddy-up when the chase is on in the snow...

Kindred Spirits

A good romp in the snow today and Inky (aka Girlfriend) has still got the Labrador piss and vinegar. Coincidentally. she sports an artificial knee and I have an artificial hip. Kindred spirits.

And at age 70 the Dowager Retriever is enjoying semi-retirement.

Schneehunde

The girls absolutely love the freshly fallen snow.  Next to muddy puddles there probably isn't anything better to a Labrador retriever.

Walk Down Memory Lane

My Pal Lawyer sent these photos to me recently.  They're from one of many trips out to South Dakota to chase ringnecks.  They're also pretty old.  The dog and I are both quite a bit grayer nowadays.

Photobombed

It is one thing to have a selfie taken with a trail camera.

It is altogether another thing to be constantly photobombed by the black Lab.

Eight days apart - two different locations.  What gives?

Not much escapes the patient vigil of a trail camera.  Are these dogs happy or what?

Crazy Labs

Oftentimes when I run the dogs with the four wheeler they'll grab a stick and run together with it like a team of horses.  Side by side, full-tilt with neither relinquishing control of the stick.  They are crazy dogs.

On rare occasions I've managed to stop and after fishing-out my smart phone take some video of this behavior while navigating the trails one-handed.  More often than not it is precisely at this moment that the dogs stop, drop the stick and look at me for direction.

This afternoon I ran the dogs with the Polaris and sure as shit they grabbed a stick and did their team of horses shtick.  I momentarily thought of pausing and fetching the phone from my pocket to shoot some video but decided against it.  I figured they'd drop the stick as soon as I paused to do so.

Today they ran with their stick side by side for almost a half mile before giving-up on the game.  Fortunately one of the trail cameras caught an action shot...

Adult Beverages

At the end of the day it's nice to have a seat on the porch, take-in the cool breeze, the caress of the summer sun and enjoy a refreshing adult beverage with your girlfriend.
