Update From the Butterfly Ranch

From this week we've observed plenty of butterflies flitting-about and visiting the sxplosion of wildflowers out back in the prairie planting.  Including.....

Burn was conducted May 4th of this year leaving a carbonized moonscape that looked like this...


After twelve weeks the verdict is rendered - from our walk this morning it is clear that the green-up is complete...

ButterFly Ranching Continued

From our walk thru the butterfly ranch is an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail coming in for a landing on a Prairie Blazing Star.

Prairie Blazing Star

Liatris pycnostachya - Prairie Blazing Star.

The stem is made of many tiny flower heads all crowded together.    Pycnostachya is Latin for crowded.

Butterflies are attracted to this plant.  And so are the deer.
