I've always said that the surest sign of the arrival of spring has been the announcement of the sandhill cranes, meadowlarks and redwing blackbirds.
This weekend the cranes were hanging-out at the still-frozen pond, the male redwings were hanging around the rain garden in the back yard and The Frau swears she heard the call of the meadowlarks.
Right on time....

Sandhill
Got this picture from the camera posted north of the big pond and the creek.
Grus canadensis - Sandhill crane.
A stately and lanky bird that is one of the tallest of birds in the world.
We've enjoyed a pair that raised a couple of little ones this year. The newborns are called colts (because of their long legs).
At this point we're only seeing the two adults and one of youngsters in flight...

Meet the Cranes
With the burnt grassland greening-up real nicely and all of the trees leafing out we haven't had an actual real time visual sighting of the crane family for weeks.
The ever-vigilant trail camera has been capturing some sporadic photos of the cranes although they have been few and far between. They all included one little one.
Aside from accepting the reality that the cranes were raising only one offspring we were concerned that the entire family had vamoosed. Until yesterday.
The dogs and I fetched the memory cards from the cameras on Friday and performed a battery replacement on a couple of them. (They were dead). I uploaded the pictures to the laptop last evening and...voila!
The cranes are still here. At least as of five days ago. The two colts are putting on some size too...

Meet The Cranes
A week ago I mentioned that a family of cranes had taken-up residence here.
Here is a picture of a parent and one of the little ones.

Baby Sandhill cranes are called colts because of their long, strong,
well-developed legs.

Meet the Cranes
We have a couple of resident cranes that arrived before the snows left. We figured they've set-up household near the fringes of the big pond some distance from the house.
The best evidence of the housekeeping part is the day following the taking of this photo The Frau went for a walk across the burned-over area of grassland and as she got closer to the pond the cranes starting giving her the what-for. Like get out of here before we peck-out your eyes.
Last weekend we saw both parents out for a stroll with a couple of fuzzy hatchlings toddling along. A Redwing blackbird was worrying them as well. Sure sign that the Redwing had a nest nearby. I guess what goes around comes around.
In the meantime we're grandparents again.
