Friday Music

This live version of the classic hit song, "Sloop John B" is a music video excerpt from the PBS TV Pledge Special all-star concert, "The Kingston Trio Celebration," featuring surprise guest, Al Jardine of The Beach Boys. The full concert aired from 2016 through 2020 and is now available on ALL major video streaming platforms from MVD Distributors.

Taped in LA at the Avalon Hollywood (formerly the iconic Hollywood Palace Theater), this song features the Trio's Bill Zorn, George Grove, and Rick Dougherty on vocals, guitars, and banjo, with their very special guest, Al Jardine, singing lead vocal on the smash hit he made famous with The Beach Boys. Longtime Trio bassist, Paul Gabrielson handles upright bass. This Trio line-up was the longest in the band's 61 years on the road, together from 2003 to 2018. The original Trio of Bob Shane, Dave Guard, Nick Reynolds, and later John Stewart - all combined were together ten years.

This music video and the full PBS TV concert special was directed by award-winning filmmaker, Chip Miller, who also co-produced with Terrel Cass. Bryan Greenberg was DP, and Head Camera Operators included MTV pioneer film director, William Dear, and Cameron Cannon. Travis Miller Line Produced and co-edited with director Miller.

Released in 1966, Sloop John B was the lead single for the album Pet Sounds - peaking at number 3 in the US and number 2 in the UK.  It resides at place number 276 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.  Al Jardine and Brian Wilson took a simple folk song and composed a masterpiece...

Wisconsin Foodie

Last Saturday I ran into Kyle Cherek at the Door County Beer Festival following the Peninsula Centuries Spring Classic bike ride.

Wisconsin Foodie is one of my favorite food shows (and I like food shows) and I thought I might pester the host for a photo with one of his fans.

Turns-out he rather liked my Swill Brothers cycling jersey.  Appropriate attire for the beer fest.  Asking about the background I shared that The First Mate and I used to brew beer in my basement and that we have three Wisconsin State Fair ribbons to show for our efforts.  The Swill Brother's Brewery is presently mothballed - packed and stored in The First Mate's basement.  It could be reconstituted quickly in the event of a national emergency or my retirement.

Go here to watch some of the prior episodes of Kyle Cherek as he eats his way across Wisconsin.

Raising a toast to Wisconsin Public Television.
