Stoned Dog

Yep.  My dog is a stoner.

Anybody remember someone from college that had that look?  And maybe a lampshade around their head?

Behind the pooch's lampshade her right forearm is stabilized with four rings and eight pins.  Fingers crossed to get the alignment correct as she heals.

In the interim she's taking some canine hallucinogenics to alleviate the discomfort.

  1. Poor baby.
I'm guessing she had some sort of accident.
    Too much fun?
Hope the contraption helps her to heal!

  2. Her arm has both a tibia and fibula and somehow she damaged the growth plate on the end one of those two arm bones.

That was causing the undamaged bone to grow and lengthen normally from both ends and the damaged bone to grow from only one end. The result was the right forearm was becoming twisted/bowed and she was becoming more lame. Left alone this would result in arthritis in the wrist and shoulder and a progressively lame and crippled dog.

The surgeon severed both bones in the middle and inserted a graft of bone in the shorter of the two bones. The tibia and fibula will grow from the middle outwards. There are four pins attached to each of the four rings holding everything in alignment.

She goes in today to check on needed adjustment and again next week. She’ll be wearing that contraption for one to two months. We figured that at 10 months of age she’ll heal fast and the procedure had a reasonably good chance of success.

The alternative was to amputate the limb. Yikes!

  4. She is doing well.

Barring any complications the rings and pins should be removed in about three weeks.
