Winter Finches

These goldfinches are a bunch of tough hombres.

Seven degree overnight lows and highs of nineteen degrees.

The hairy woodpecker has been eating from the peanut feeder we put out this winter

But what's with the finches? This is a bit unusual - but I suppose if we keep the three finch tubes full they may just stick around, eh?

  1. The goldfinches will stay where there's food.
They generally don't migrate anyway and I'm looking at a group of 8 on my feeder right now!
I'm looking forward to seeing more winter birds as the season moves along...hoping to have the Pine Siskins and the Common Redpolls.

  2. For such a little bird they sure are tenacious in such tough conditions.

We've been watching mourning doves and tree sparrows all day feeding on anything that has dropped from the feeder to the ground.
