Composed by Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings of the Canadian band The Guess Who exists in two versions. The first recording was was featured on The Guess Who's Canned Wheat album while the second was featured on the album, American Woman.
The second version was released as a single in 1969 and is likely the version you remember. The tempo is faster, a couple of verses transposed and the single was shortened by cutting Bachman's guitar solo.
It rose to to Number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100, first place in Canada and one of three million-selling singles for The Guess Who - American Woman/No Sugar Tonight, Laughing/Undun and No Time.
