New Year Night Sky

Last, but not least, night sky post for this month.

Shortly after sunset tonight and tomorrow make a point to cast your gaze to the southwest horizon.

With the unaided eye you should be able spot a very thin waxing crescent moon low above the horizon.  If conditions are good you should be able to view the glow of the shaded portion of the moon in the glow of earthshine.    Much higher in the sky you cannot miss Venus as the brightest object in the sky.  Saturn is nearby.
