Survivor

In September I go a picture of this fella sporting his velvet antlers-

A very distinctive spike buck.

Since then he's shown-up a couple of other times as he's made his rounds.

Here he is again.

Sporting only one of his antlers.

This fella survived the hunting season.  If he sticks around it would be cool to see what he grows next year.

Guess the Critter

Girlfriend and I went back to check on visitors to the pheasant carcasses we deposited yesterday.  Two of the bird remains were gone - the dog found one of them about twenty five feet away and we put it back on the pile and refreshed the memory card.

Look who's back...

Priming the Pump

Girlfriend and I went out yesterday with Lawyer and Lawyer's Bro to chase pheasants.

Four birds apiece for a morning of hunting.

Four carcasses out to the trail camera to see what we can catch on digital...

Curious Does

Same date, same camera, end of the day.  Tell me these deer aren't just a wee bit leery of who's taking their picture...

Urge to Sniff

After a month of dumping the Tink's #69 Doe-In-Rut Lure on the ground it is hard to believe that the scent still persists.

Maybe the deer have been adding their own pee to the spot?

Of  course it was an entire bottle...

Couple of Bucks

Pictures of two different bucks, taken with two different cameras, early AM and on the same date...

Hot Spot

Camera #2 (in the location that I had previously forgotten) is actually in a pretty good spot for acquiring pictures of congregating deer.

It's excellent cover - swamp oak, cedar, willow and tamarack - adjacent to a large open meadow.

All you have to do is locate where the trails intersect, mount the cam on a sturdy tree and voila!

How many deer can you count in the last picture?

The Hairy Eyeball

From time to time a curious deer will actually stick their face right in the camera.  In this case both cameras got the hairy eyeball treatment on different dates.

Wonder if it is the same deer...

Guess the Critter

First-off Girlfriend and I did a crappy job of positioning our bait.

I placed the skinned-out pheasant carcasses in what I thought was a good position for photographing who might dine on them.  But When we left Girlfriend insisted on fetching them and following me on the ATV.

Not once, butt twice I had to return and reposition the offering.  In the confusion of It all I ended-up placing the dead bird parts too close to the camera than I would have liked.

Nevertheless, we had a visitor who picked the carcasses clean.

When we returned a week later there was nothing left but a pile of feathers.

Who is it?

Setting the Trap

A week ago Girlfriend and I left a couple of skinned-out  pheasant carcasses in front of one of the game cameras.

Yesterday we fetched the memory card so tomorrow you can see who feasted on this tasty snack.

Urge to Sniff

Just goes to show if you use enough deer pee someone's going to have to give it a sniff...

The Sneak

A whitetail using this posture is said to be sneaking. Of course, they're always sneaking.  Same for this wily doe.

With this many deer hanging-around they have to sneak.

Otherwise you might trip over them...

Alien Death Ray Attack?

More supernatural phenomena or simply a driving snow squall...

Urge to Sniff

Seems that other four-legged residents cannot resist the scent of Tink's #69 Doe-In-Rut Lure.

I got numerous pictures of this coyote giving the area the once-over.

Or is that a chubby gray fox?

Any ideas?

Nice Shots

Plenty of camera action after dark.  Here's a couple of decent daylight shots taken by the trail cameras...

Urge to Sniff

Some of the first visitors to come along and give the pee bomb a sniff were a couple of bucks.

These boys just couldn't resist the scent of Tink's #69 Doe-In-Rut Lure...

Using An Attractant

Except for a deer carcass about three years ago I haven't used an attractant for luring anyone to the trail cameras for a spell.

Last weekend Girlfriend and  I swapped-out the memory cards on the cameras and left a 'gift' of two skinned pheasant carcasses under the nose of one of the cams. We'll have to wait and see who, if anyone, comes to investigate or dine upon this delicious snack.

A month ago I took an entire bottle of deer urine and deposited it in various locations close to the active scrape.  I'll be posting pictures of some of the critters that stopped by for a sniff.

Plus a pile of additional pictures - so many you might just get bored.  (Of course if you're bored you should stay away and not visit here).  It's The Revenge of the Trail Camera!

Still Sporting Headgear?

A couple of weeks ago this fella was still sporting his headgear.  That seems a bit late.  I wonder if he's shed his antlers by now.  I should probably be out hunting for sheds with the dog...

Winter Birds

The black Lab and I finally got out together to chase-down some birds this last weekend.

Damn!  It feels good to get out on the new hip joint and watch the dog hunt.

We were both limping a bit afterwards - but it looks like we're back in the game.

Details over at the original blog.

The Revenge of the Trail Camera

Girlfriend and I went out after breakfast and fetched the memory cards from the trail cameras.  I hunted for the #2 camera as I wasn't precisely sure where I moved it to.

Some observations:

1.  If you leave a couple of tail cameras undisturbed for a month you stand a good possibility of collecting something on the order of 400 images.

2.  There are deer all over the place.  With some snow on the ground there are trails everywhere and bedding spots in the thick pines.  The cameras confirm it

3.  Battery life in the Moultrie camera is fantastic.  They're still at 70%

Here are some pictures that were captured just this morning...

Truth in Advertising

I'm not sure that grand dad wore Old Spice aftershave or used Old Spice Original Stick deodorant.  But my pop did.

And I do too.

So I suppose there is some truth to this bold claim made by Procter & Gamble.

It's old school men's smellum and even though I had a dalliance with Brut during college - I returned to Old Spice.

Anyway, it will be a good tale to tell the daughter and grandson.

Small Company - Free Pizza

One of the side benefits of working in a small company is it is pretty much like family.  A big family - but a family nevertheless.

There aren't any secrets to be kept and everyone looks out for one another.

The other benefit is pizza.

The senior partner ordered pizza from Rosati's for lunch today.  Pepperoni and sausage, pepperoni and mushroom, veggie and chicken Alfredo.

I'll eat my PB&J sammich tomorrow.

Trail Blazer

The latest edition of my favorite publication - Wisconsin Outdoor News - had an article that caught my eye.

The Wisconsin hunter safety program originated in 1967 in Dunn County. In 1985 the course was required for hunters born after 1972. Last year, 25,019 people completed a hunter safety class, and that number pushed the total number of hunter safety graduates past the 1 million mark.

I graduated from the program in 1968.  Looking at my license I can see I was number 8665.
