The Democratic Party controlled the American South for most of the 20th century. They practiced the worst sort of authoritarian rule - blocking people from voting and tolerating violence to suppress people and keep their grip on power.
Donald Trump's offensive musings, childish behavior and intemperate outbursts pale in comparison. Contemporary American politics are comparatively better than those that are easily within modern memory.
Something history shows us is that our country's divisions are based-upon ignorance, intolerance and bigotry. This strikes me as unusual as the United States still maintains an ‘educational edge’ over most other nations in the world. Perhaps other, more insidious, forces are at work. Maybe we need a gullibility measure or index. Or a stupid thermometer.
Nevertheless, I am hopeful that the American experiment will continue and that the current interlude is part of the learning experience. I am optimistic that we can - and will - do better.
It might be helpful if more people would practice more of the religious tenants and teachings they are fond of invoking.
Keeping my glass half-full...
