Pushing the Edge of the Retort Envelope

As my temporary bachelorhood draws to a close I thought it only fitting that I dine effortlessly this evening.

Tonight’s fare featured a Meal-Ready-To-Eat (MRE) from the bunker. A thirteen-year-old MRE too. Cheese tortellini in marinara sauce beat-out BBQ sauce w/ chicken, black beans and potatoes. Applesauce and oatmeal cookie for dessert. The nut mix with raisins had gone all rancid. Nuts cannot survive thirteen years - even in a bunker.  The rest survived nicely in its retort packaging.

The tortellini was excellent. Subtle spiciness with large chunks of tomato in the sauce.

The apple sauce (featuring small chunks of apple) was excellent too. And the cookie was crunchy with a hint of cinnamon, nutmeg and a dusting of sugar. Not the least bit stale.

The meal included reading material (the story of applesauce)  and the wet wipe (still wet) with a refreshing lemony scent.

Not bad chow considering it’s considerably older than my grandson....
