Smile For The Trail Camera

Plenty of deer on the trail camera. What's interesting is there is nothing there for them other than the curiosity effect.

No bait, no scent attractant - nothing.

The Series

The 2010 World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Texas Rangers kicked off in San Francisco this week.

One player, Ranger catcher Bengie Molina, is guaranteed a World Series ring regardless who wins. Molina spent the first part of the year with the Giants and was traded to the Rangers on July 1 making him eligible regardless of the series outcome.

Bengie is the oldest of three brothers who are all major league catchers and are the only trio of brothers to have earned championship rings.

Top Ten War Movies - #2

Number two.

And another point of view.

When I registered for the draft pop offered me some counsel about enlisting in the military.

He said to not wait for the draft notice but to enlist in the Navy. Not the Army. His reasoning was that I would be assured of three square meals a day and a warm bunk every evening. In retrospect, his advice became a moot point because Nixon instituted the all-volunteer military and the draft disappeared. Nonetheless, I dunno about dad's wisdom.

While I have no personal experience in the matter I happen to think that there is nothing worse than having someone shoot at you.

Especially if you are underwater.

This 1981 motion picture is a riveting portrayal of the horrors of warfare.

Starring in Das Boot were Jürgen Prochnow, Herbert Grönemeyer, Klaus Wennemann, Hubertus Bengsch and Martin Semmelrogge.

If you ever have an opportunity to watch it in surround sound on the big screen - hang on tight...

Fishy Economics

Fishing is a big deal in Wisconsin.

It is estimated that $2.3 billion of annual economic activity can be attributed to fishing in this state.

Fishing-related retail sales account for $1.2 billion and the sport brings in an additional $90 million in state tax revenues. It is also responsible for approximately 26,000 jobs.

Fast Food Nation

The fast food industry is a massive, global market. The industry generates billions of transactions worth an estimated $100 billion annually.

Two of the biggest, YUM Brands and McDonald's, have footprints all over the world. YUM Brands, which includes, among others, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and KFC, has over 37,000 restaurants in over 110 countries.

McDonald's has over 32,000 stores in 117 countries and serves an average of 60 million customers a day. Not every idea generated by these fast food giants is an instant hit with the public, though.

View a list of 15 major fast food failures.

Top Ten War Movies - #3

Steve Spielberg directed this 1998 motion picture.

Starring Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns and Barry Pepper.

The opening scene - the 2nd Ranger Battalion's assault on the Normandy beachead - left me numb.

I saw this movie with my pop - a combat veteran of the Normandy invasion. I can count upon one hand the number of times in my life I witnessed my father shed a tear. So effective was Spielberg's portrayal of combat that dad cried during this movie.

Deer Camp

Last Sunday afternoon Braumeister and I had to repair a couple of deer stands.

Recent high winds tore some of them-up pretty well.

One of the oldest stands that has stood mightily against two decades of everything Mother Nature threw at it is totally destroyed.

Toast.

One of the supporting trees actually snapped-off above the floor and took the rails and seat to the ground.
