Beard Frost

When temperatures are above freezing water vapor (dew) can condense and collect on grasses, branches rocks and other surfaces.

If the temperature falls to freezing (or below) the dew can take the form of a white covering known as frost.

A feathery form of frost phenomena occurs when climatic conditions (typically overnight) are such that crystalline spicules grow from water vapor in the air upon the freezing surface of solid objects.

This is called desublimation (changing directly from a gas to a solid with no intermediate liquid phase).  The air must be humid, but not so humid that solid ice forms.  Wind moves the humid air over frozen objects causing frost spicules to form.  The size of these feathery crystals depends-upon the temperature, the amount of water vapor in the air and how long they are allowed to grow undisturbed.  The result is called hoarfrost.

The word hoar derives from old English and refers to the old age appearance of the ice crystals that mimic white hair or a beard.

Jack Frost was rather busy overnight as we woke to a crystalline wonderland.

After breakfast the dog and I scored more than 40 photos of this wonderment on our walk today.

Here are a handful...

Election Economics

It should come as no surprise that for many individuals and households their standard of living improved during the time Donald Trump was in the White House.  That's not to say that things ended badly with the COVID pandemic and recession at the close of his term of office; people tend to remember the positive and discount the negative.

It is textbook economics that massive stimulus spending and supply chain disruptions during both the Trump and Biden administrations are the causal contributors to the recent spike in inflation.   The impact of inflation materialized during Biden's occupation of the White House.  Consequently, many individuals associate inflation as something Biden is solely responsible-for.  Surprised?  Voters aren't economists. Economics is complicated stuff for anybody who drinks from the Face Book cesspool of lazy economic thought.  Excess liquidity and stimulus largess was the primary cause and interventionist action by the federal reserve is the prescribed cure.  Sure, I get the politics of gaslighting the inflation issue.  But I digress.

Under Biden many individuals and families have struggled with inflation.  And while conditions have improved this may not be enough for some voters.  For Biden that is a burdensome problem.

Trump has any manner of personal flaws, admires bad guys like Vladimir Putin, tried to steal an election, fomented a riot and continues to deny his 2020 election loss.  For Trump that is a burdensome problem.

For both Trump and Biden their administrations enjoyed the benefit of economic success and the challenges of economic headwinds.  Nothing new under the sun there.

There are voters that loathe Donald Trump and there are voters who loathe Joe Biden.  Voters frequently judge their presidents based upon their personal economic gains or losses coincident with a given administration.  Confirmation bias too.  Because I go out of my way to not allow politics to infect financial decisions I've prospered during the reign of both of these presidents.  Actually every president for as long as it mattered.

As a recovering financial guy it's easy for me to view the current economic condition with a rational eye.  What I see is an American economy that grew at a healthy clip in 2023.  Unemployment remained low, inflation continued to drop, job growth is holding steady, real wages (adjusted for inflation) exceed pre-COVID levels.  And exceeding forecasts, GDP growth climbed by 3.3 percent in the last quarter.  Speaking of forecasts, a year ago expectations were for a recession.  Today it is expected that while growth may slow in 2024; in the absence of an unexpected outside event (read: wider middle east war), no major downturn.  Consumer sentiment should continue to rebound.

If you want to throw your support to Biden because you believe you'll prosper knock yourself out.  If you're a Trump backer because you're convinced the current economy is a hell hole; hey, knock yourself out.  Know this:  election outcomes are more frequently determined by rational individuals found in the middle.  Namely independent and disaffected voters.

Just last month, polling by Gallup highlighted that more voters now identify as independent - forty-three percent - tying the previous high not seen since 2014.  Ponder the implications of this shift in light of the 2024 election.

The impact of a single president over something as huge and complicated as our economy is frequently overstated.

A platform of grievance and retribution doesn't cut it for me.

That's my nuance.

P.S. - At the time this is published the markets have also set record highs. Nevertheless, I acquired shares of BA at a significant discount recently.  An assembly mistake is not the same as a design defect.

1 Timothy 6:10

Rather, it is that a love of money can lead a person to virtually any other sin.  Greed can enhance, inspire and amplify the temptation of any other sin and lead us to disaster.

The writing of the Apostle Paul continues by saying that believers tempted by a love of money can leave a close walk with God.

Never Grab A Groundhog

Groundhog Day is a big event every year on this day over in Gobblers Knob, Pennsylvania.
Someone provokes a hibernating woodchuck named Punxsutawney Phil to come out of his hole and predict the arrival of spring.

Even I can do that.  Provoked by the alarm clock I crawled out of a perfectly warm bed this morning at 5:30 AM, poured myself a steaming cuppa joe and took the dog out to pee.  It was snowing.  I therefore concluded more winter before the arrival of spring.

The man in the picture is a fool.  You should never grab a groundhog - especially if you are going to wave it around in the air over your head.

From the Algonquian wuchak - also known as the whistle pig - Marmota monax belongs to the vast squirrel family. They are big rodents.

They are also sinister-looking with their small ears, beady black eyes and very sharp teeth to go with all of their claws.  I wouldn’t grab a groundhog any sooner than I'd make a grab for a beaver or a porcupine. They are all much too dangerous.

Trust me.  I know this.

I have had to deal with multiple critters infestations under my barn. This includes everything from bunnies, to raccoons to kittens.  One year I had a groundhog.  And that bugger was burrowing furiously.

Groundhogs are well adapted miners.  They have short but powerful legs and very sharp claws.  They are capable of excavating hundreds of pounds of dirt.   And this fella was chucking enough dirt that it wouldn’t be long before he seriously undermined the structural integrity of the barn foundation.

Shooting a woodchuck is against the law in Wisconsin. Yep - they’re protected - just like badgers and wolves.  Not wanting to draw the attention of the local game warden and pleading a landowner exception I opted for the old reliable method.

Mothballs.

I poured a box of mothballs down the woodchuck’s hole.  Oh sure, your barn will smell like grandma for a while but critters cannot stand mothballs.  And it worked almost immediately for me.

I was puttering in the machine shed when old Phil (smelling strangely of naphthalene) waddled his way into the shed and gave me the hairy eyeball.  He was not happy.  Actually, he was angry to the point of provocation because he reared-up on his hind legs and gave me a nasty bark.

Taking a machete from the peg board I waved it menacingly and told him to get the heck out of my shed.

He scurried away retreating behind a sheet of plywood leaning against the wall.

I grabbed a garden rake and thrust it in his face.

He snorted and whistled and parried back with his claws.

Claw for claw - back and forth we went. Parry and thrust. I was gaining the upper hand and Phil was losing ground.

Finally forced from the shed he scurried a safe distance from the crazy guy with the rake, turned and gave me a dirty look and waddled-off in the direction of a neighboring farm.

Nasty attitude the groundhog has.

Dangerous too.

Shooting The Moon

Last evening before bedtime I took the pup outside for last call.  For the first time in a long time we were not socked-in with low overcast, fog or rain.

The current moon phase for January 31, 2024 is known as a Waning Gibbous phase

Yesterday the moon was 19.5 days old and 78 percent illuminated.

So I took some photos.

And while I had some downtime in my busy day this afternoon I fiddled with some filters on one photo.  The moon is not very distinct (a shortcoming of even an iPhone 14 Pro).  But the Google Snapseed filtering allows for some interesting results.

Original, enhanced color spectrum and artsy black and white.

Pro Tip - Snapseed is a free app...
