Taking Longer to Empty the Nest

The US Census Bureau has been releasing all manner of useful information in the past few weeks.

One of the more curious findings is following a decline over many years - households have reversed course and started to increase in size.

In 2009 the average household consisted of 2.59 individuals. This was up from 2.56 two years earlier. The first increase since 1993.

According to Julia Coronado and Yelena Shulyatyeva of BNP Paribas - this is not because parents are having more children. They attribute this to the phenomenon of children taking longer to move out.

There are likely a number of factors at play but it is suspected that the main contributor is the recession and the difficulties youngsters are having with unemployment or landing a first job.

In simple terms - living with their parents has become more attractive or a necessity.
