Newborn

The girls and I were out for a walk this morning and check-out what the Labs found...

This little one was just born.  Brand, spanking, new!  The fawn was still drying-out and unable to stand.  In all my years this old hunter has never witnessed a newly-birthed deer.

Some whitetail biology.  When a fawn is born it is odorless so that predators are not drawn to the location.   As evidence of this the Labs stumbled on this baby right in the trail and sure didn't sniff it out.

The mother will even stay stay away from the fawn for a day or two so her scent does not rub off on the fawn or attract predators to the area where the fawn is hiding.

As a defense mechanism fawns will remain perfectly still blending-in with their natural camouflage.  If this little one makes it past the first week of life it stands a good chance of surviving to adulthood.

Typically does give birth beginning in April through early July.

We skedaddled out of there right away.
