The anniversary of the death of one of my favorite country
artists is April 6th, 2016.
It is only fair that I plat tribute to his contributions to the country
music culture today.
In and out of the
1950s juvenile justice system he landed in San Quentin prison for attempted
robbery. Partial to music from early-on
he was inspired by Johnny Cash’s performance at San Quentin and joined the
prison country music band. He was
paroled in 1960 and never looked back.
While his song-writing and performance career had its ups and down his
personal life was a roller coaster of marriages, divorces and more. He was notorious for smoking weed. Nevertheless, a long career produced
recognition and awards from the Academy of Country Music, Country Music
Association, and National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (Grammy
Award). He was inducted into the
Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum
and the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame. He also
received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
