Composed in 1948 by the American songwriter and actor Stan Jones.
The song weaves a tale about a cowboy who has a vision of steel-hooved, red-eyed cattle thundering across the sky pursued by the spirits of damned cowboys - one of whom warns the earthly cowhand that if doesn't mend his errant ways his fate is to join them - doomed for eternity trying to catch the Devil's herd across these endless skies.
This song had been covered by just about everyone in the country genre. This is a nice version by the Highwaymen live at the Nassau Coliseum, 1990.
