Outlaw country performer Waylon Jennings’ music has been characterized
by his powerful voice, some of what has been described as his ‘rough-edged
quality’, as well as his phrasing and texture.
Jennings’ image was marked by his long hair and beard, as well as his
black hat and the black leather vest he wore during appearances. His life was marked by four marriages,
substance abuse, addiction, recovery, illness and a remarkable discography. Between
1966 and 1995, 54 Jennings albums charted, with 11 reaching number one – while 96
singles charted, with 16 reaching number one.
In 2001, Jennings was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Having led a life on the fringe of mainstream
country music in an act of defiance he scorned the ceremony sending his son
Buddy Dean Jennings instead.
