Composed by John Prine this song was originally released on his 1986 album German Afternoons. Contrasted with Jason Aldean's very average recent release this is, in my opinion, an example of excellent country music. As evidence of this, a cover version by Kim Carnes reached number 70 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. To be fair, Aldean's Small Town tune has charted higher - driven more by outrage over perceived victimhood - instead of musical merits. Go figure.
Anyway, having been lost to the ages during COVID, John Prine will no longer entertain us in person. However, he did record a lovely duet with Nanci Griffith (another fan fave of mine). I'll maybe find a good live version to post some future Friday. Until then here a terrific solo version.
