Mama and the Twins

That would be mom on the left warily eyeing-up the camera.  The twins are center and right and both look like boys.  Adolescent boys that are almost full grown.

Yes, boys.  Say it along with me class:

That's a buck because a boy deer is characterized as having a flat-top.  Girl deer have a dome-shaped head.

Very good.

Always a good rule of thumb during hunting season when you might want to favor the taking of a doe and let the little bucks walk.

Vote!

"Jingoism, racism, fear, religious fundamentalism - these are the ways of appealing to people if you’re trying to organize a mass base of support for policies that are really intended to crush them."

-Noam Chomsky

If I had to hazard a guess the Democrats have been burning the midnight oil compiling an extensive collection of opposition research pertaining to The Great and Terrible Oz which stands every possibility, when hung-around the neck of the Republican Party, could have devastating consequences for the GOP by the time November rolls around.

The Terrible Oz continues to play the disaffected like Nero's fiddle. They don't realize he is a fraud, everything he says is a lie and jobs that have left for China long ago are not coming back.  Those jobs have already disappeared into lower wage nations such as Vietnam and Indonesia.   And all the while the Wizard is burning the Republican Party to ashes along with his chances of ever being the Leader of the Free World.

The Terrible Oz appeals to all of those who feel that the government has ignored them as their economic, medical, and social difficulties for years have worsened.  Just as the original Oz from Kansas worked the carnival side shows the Terrible Oz from Queens, NY has been an entertainer for years and knows how to tap into those anxieties.

The self-absorbed former Secretary of State – having enjoyed celebrity herself for years – has outwardly gotten away with indiscretions and decisions which may be illegal.

All of this is – of course – magnified by social media which allows for hateful and anonymous communication.

The hatred and divisiveness in this country are a consequence of the two parties having declared war upon each other instead of the real problems we face.

Wisconsin goes to the polls tomorrow in a free and open primary.  Please vote your conscience.
Turnout might set a recent record so allow plenty of time.  And do not forget your photo ID...

Gas or Electric

Been cooking on gas (or propane) since 1992 and after four homes similarly-equipped the apartment is outfitted with (gasp!) some sort of crazy radiant electric cooktop and combo convection/microwave oven.

Having unpacked virtually all of the cookware I stumbled my way thru dinner prep tonight. Cornish game hens (regular electric oven) and farro perlato risotto (homemade giblet stock) - steamed broccoli.

Everything turned out fine but the oven and stovetop are slow to respond both up and down the temperature gradient which is absolutely maddening. I can tell this is going to be a steep learning curve but I’ll figure it out.

Where I need some advice is the convection microwave. The instructions are sparse in the department of directions. Note: Heretofore I only use a microwave for reheating leftovers, heating or melting stuff and sometimes sterilizing potting soil - never actual real cooking.

Not experimenting with anything of any consequence until I master it but the convection oven feature is intriguing.

Any guidance is welcome.

Coffee, Beer or Wine?

We're spending the weekend at the new city apartment to unpack and settle-in.

Yesterday I took the girls out in the freshly fallen snow for their post-breakfast walk and we became acquainted with four of our new neighbors - two legged and four-legged.

We hadn't gone very far when a woman (with cart full of household effects) stopped to greet the girls and me.  Before too long her husband joined us with his cart of stuff.

Turns out they were moving from the building to the west to their permanent apartment in our building. They're similarly-situated with a second home in the country and now a city apartment.  They also have a couple of Labs - one a blonde and the other a chocolate.

As I continued on our walk so they could continue moving their stuff she mentioned they were four doors down the corridor from us.  She asked:  After we're all settled-in coffee, beer or wine?

Kinda liking the new neighborhood...

Lovely Spring Weather

Woke up to this today.

Spring in Wisconsin.

The good news is this photo was taken from the new city home - an apartment in Wauwatosa.  So I don't have to shovel any of this stuff and my parking is underground...

The Great Divide

I had a conversation with an acquaintance recently about the November election not necessarily being a contest of Democrat versus Republican.  Rather, it is a referendum on urban versus rural America.

Think about it.  Something on the order of fifteen percent of the population of the United States resides in rural counties spread across 72 percent of the nation's land area.  Rural America leans conservative.

Urban America is characterized by large population densities, greater ethnic diversity, larger numbers of college graduates – particularly those with advanced degrees – and a larger concentration of wealth and economic activity.  Urban America leans moderate to liberal.

Like it or not - urban America elects the President.

The GOP had a couple of candidates that did well in the urban areas in the early primaries - Kasich and Rubio. Now they are down to one.  It is not The Great and Terrible Oz.

Talking Turkey

In case any of my turkey hunting pals are reading this I want to get everyone's turkey hunting juices flowing and suggest that everyone only think positive thoughts about the hunt.

Mind you - I'm not going to be rash by being provocative or a braggart as that might invoke the wrath of The Turkey Gods.  Nevertheless, every week there are nice gobblers  posing for a picture on a trail camera.

While the adult males are definitely traveling in their bachelor groups as the breeding season ramps-up they'll eventually begin to compete for mates, the males will disperse and gather their own harems.  Flocks of hens have been cruising through on a regular basis and as everyone knows - where there girls go the boys will follow...
