From the Butterfly Ranch

Jill found these monarch caterpillars yesterday.

I'm sure they're not the only ones.  Presuming they're about ready to pupate that means they'll be hanging around a minimum of two weeks before emerging as adult butterflies.  If they haven't reached their last instar do the math - that is somewhere between the middle or end of September before they emerge to begin their migration south to the gulf states and Mexico.  Too late?

I asked a butterfly expert about this and she sent the following reply by email:  The last generation is often seemingly late. The caterpillars you have there will likely hatch within 2 weeks and will still have plenty of time to head out.  If they can avoid freezing temps on their southern trip, they'll be ok. (this year they may have some new "lakes" over Houston to contend with).
