Friday Music

From the 1971 album Aqualung this song is considered one of Jethro Tull’s best songs and a live performance favorite.

Ironically, a live performances were initially near to impossible as the original song was pieced-together and recorded using a technique known as overdubbing.  Ian Anderson performed his flute and vocal parts for recording.  This was followed by separate recordings for acoustic, electric guitar, cymbals and bass drum.  Piano parts, the rest of the drums and electric guitar parts by other members of the band were then recorded.  All of this was mixed (overdubbed) like a complicated layer cake in the studio with the song coming together to replicate the rhythmic chugging of a train.

Sans hair and 45 years later still fantastic – Locomotive Breath
