Flying Closer to the Sun

The word perihelion is from the Greek peri (near) and helios (sun).

In the northern hemisphere planet Earth is closest to the sun – the perihelion - every year in early January.  We’re farthest away from the sun in early July.

Our planet Earth will be 3 million miles closer to the sun for all of 2017 at precisely 8:18 AM tomorrow – January 4th.  If you pay attention you might conclude that it is a bit warmer.

Just kidding.  In astronomical terms 3 million miles is inconsequential – not even enough to impact the seasons on Earth.
