John Townes Van Zandt – popularly known as Townes Van
Zandt – was an American songwriter who tragically lost his life January 1st
of 1997 to an episode of cardiac arrhythmia and related health problems stemming
from an adult life of substance abuse.
Recorded for Van Zandt's first album in 1972,
covered by Emmylou Harris in 1977, and again covered by Willie Nelson and Merle
Haggard in 1983 it rose to number one on the Billboard country music charts.
