Wisconsin National Guard Comes to Door and Kewaunee Counties

And not to put-down a riot or quell civil unrest.  But to assist our community look after our countrymen.

So yesterday there was this…

Because of this email I received several days earlier….

Good Morning to the Coalition Volunteers,
Just a very quick email – still looking for a few more volunteers to help this week with the Community testing program. Most of our openings are in the afternoon 2:00 to 7:00 PM. Looking for help primarily directing traffic.
Again, here are the specifics
  • Location – Door County Justice Center – 1205 South Duluth Ave, Sturgeon Bay
  • Event Dates are June 2nd, 3rd and 4th (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week)
  • The event starts at 10:00 AM and runs until 7:00 PM
  • We have broken each day into two time slots 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 2:00PM to 7:00 PM. If you would like you can sign up for part of or for the entire day.
  • All Protective clothing and training will be provided at the location
Volunteer assignments will include:
    • Traffic control and direction
    • Beginning the paperwork process with those who are being tested.
    • We are being told that all volunteer opportunities are no contact roles but may be in close proximity of someone that has Covid 19 symptoms.
    • The primary role / function of the volunteers will be traffic control and direction
    • The secondary role that is currently not being planned to be staffed with volunteers is assisting with paperwork.
This is the example we were provided for the paperwork:
    • Those being tested are staying in their cars.
    • Drivers license will be held to the inside of the car window
    • Volunteer will record the information from the driver’s license
    • Paperwork will be placed under the windshield wiper
    • The testing location will be configured to provide up to 4 lanes of traffic but will start with 2 lanes and expand as needed.
    •  We will have the Covid 19 community test volunteer opportunities posted in Volgisitics this afternoon (Thursday May 28).
    Thanks

    Door County Fire Chiefs

Bottom line is I was the first smiling face that anybody arriving at the justice center saw – at least for the first shift volunteers anyway.  Yesterday's testing was for essential employees (healthcare and first responders) and selected Door and Kewaunee County employers.

Likely three to four news organizations sent camera crews and after last evening's news cycle business should be busier yet today.  We'll see.

In any event the heat and sun sorta kicked my ass yesterday so more sunblock and hydration is on tap today.

    A few quick takeaways:

We’ve got a small detail of roughly a couple-dozen soldiers working here and Wisconsin National Guard troopers are exceedingly efficient.

Door and Kewaunee County Emergency Management really have their shit together.

It is terrific to watch a community come together over a crisis and work toward everyone’s mutual benefit.

    More today and tomorrow.

    Stay tuned…….
