Talking Turkey

The day job has really gotten into my turkey hunting this year.  Sigh.

But if you think this temporary disappointment thru to its logical conclusion you would conclude that it is the day job that makes this all possible.  No job no hunt.  No job no boat.  No boat no fish.  You get the picture, no?

After setting up blinds this morning I spent a long half-day calling.  No gobbling or squawking.  Not a peep.

It was a beautiful, sunny spring day perfect for getting caught-up with my reading - and some day job on the smart phone - but no birds.

And that would be unusual since this set-up of a jake (juvenile male turkey) shagging a hen is usually enough to enrage a dominant gobbler.

I've had big, old gobblers rush in and attack this set-up.  Not today.

I ran to town to fetch the mail and some supplies from the local grocery and wouldn't you know it - in the big hay field eat of Swamp Court there was a handful of gobblers strutting their stuff for hens to fill their harem.  About 16 birds total.

Go figure.
