More on Free Trade

The television pictured above is my new Samsung, internet HDTV.  It cost about half of the Samsung HDTV I purchased only a few years ago.  It is lighter in weight, includes more features and is a quality product.  It was made in Tijuana, Mexico.

The presumed GOP candidate for president recently inveighed against Nabisco and Ford for shifting production to Mexico from high-cost Illinois and Michigan. Never mind that one reason Ford made the move was to take advantage of Mexico’s free-trade agreements with the European Union and other countries, meaning that opposition to free trade is the very thing that drives business abroad.

According to the Wall Street Journal Mexico is the second-largest purchaser of U.S. products; the Wilson Center’s Christopher Wilson has estimated that “six million U.S. jobs depend on trade with Mexico.” That is especially true for border states. “Mexico is the top export destination for five states: California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and New Hampshire, and is the second most important market for another 17 states across the country.”

Let's not forget our neighbors to the north.  These bar stools were made in Canada.

It is a great puzzlement to me why someone would want to erect barriers to free trade.  Maybe his minions really do believe that their fortunes will change and jobs that went overseas long ago will miraculously reappear.  Alas, all is only wishful thinking,  A scam perpetrated upon the vulnerable by a con man from Queens.

Raising a toast to North American Free Trade.  It's what made America Great!
