Mighty Monarch

Meet Danaus plexippus - the Monarch butterfly.

This butterfly is capable of flying 2,000 miles from Canada to Mexico and back again to the southern United States.

When female Monarchs return in the spring they lay their eggs along the way with new generations of butterflies replacing the previous.  The metamorphoses from egg to adult takes about four weeks so there are multiple generations of butterfly in the space of a year.

It's been a banner year for this butterfly here at The Platz.  The one in the photo above was spied on an autumn aster just this past Sunday.
