Operation Cobra

Good material posted today by the folks over at War is Boring.  The story about Operation Cobra.  Nicely done.

My late father was there and lived to tell the tale.  He was an infantry replacement assigned to M Company, 47th Infantry, 9th Division.  He was a heavy machine gunner in a weapons platoon.  In his memoirs he recounted the bombing, the loss of their command and a Wisconsin farm boy he trained with in basic - Art Draeving - who was killed in the bombing.

Almost four years ago my wife and I traveled to France and spent a number of days touring the Norman countryside following the ebb and flow of battle and probably the very same ground that my father fought upon with his comrades of the 9th Division.

Follow the link to Chapter III of that journey from the former WauwatosaNOW blog.  Included are some photographs dating to the battle and our return to the battlefield.
