Button Buck

Also known as a nubbin buck is a buck that is only a half year old.  Since they were only born this year they have little nubs - buttons - where their antlers are going to develop.  Like this...

A spike is usually a buck that is a year and a half old and has an inch or more of antler without a fork.

In the case of this nubbin he showed-up with his mama and twin sister.  Edit to add:  After careful review of the first photo I believe that to be his twin brother.

Does are easily identified by their dome skull.  Young bucks sport flat tops and does always have domed heads.

Here at The Platz when deer hunting we make an effort (not always successfully) to let the little bucks walk and take all the adult and six month old does you can.  That way we can make progress in slowing the growth of the herd and maintaining a proper balance between sex and age.
